THE DESIGNER

meet magen

Raised by an Architect and a Fine Artist in an 18th century farm house, Magen was exposed to the visual arts and design from a very young age.  Her interest in Interior Design can be traced back to the hours upon hours she spent rearranging and decorating the dollhouse her father built her. No scrap of fabric, acorn-top or button was safe!

Magen earned a BA with Honors in Painting and Creative writing from Goucher College, a Certificate in Scenic Painting from Yale University, and a Masters of Fine Arts in Scenic Design from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.  Her talent for design led to many jobs designing sets in New York, Dallas and Los Angeles for music videos, film, commercials, regional theater, retail windows and one well-known purple dinosaur.

A move back to Philadelphia in 2000 was followed not only by three children, but also a segue from Scenic into Interior Design. For the next 16 years, Magen worked as the in-house Interior Designer for her family’s 30 year old Property Management Company, making design decisions for dozens of Commercial and Residential buildings along the Eastern Seaboard.

After years of helping friends and family members with Interior Design, Magen finally decided to open a design studio.  In 2017, armed with a Certificate in Interior Design from Harcum College, Magen formed Magen Kauffman Interiors.

Magen finds that collaboration with clients and the teamwork “behind the scenes” with different trades is very similar to putting on a production. Her attention to detail, talent and artistic experiences informs her signature aesthetic, which can be described as elegant and timeless with a modern sensibility and a definitive nod toward whimsy.

Magen, her husband and three children live in Suburban Philadelphia. When not designing for clients or rearranging the furniture in her own home, Magen can be found painting in both watercolor and with encaustics and taking long walks with her dogs Horatio and Bleecker.
